The famed Lincoln Cannon Ball in Jordan,NY

Help is needed! What is the total story behind the Lincoln cannon ball in Jordan?
We've heard many stories but are hoping to get the real deal.
If you know the story but aren't comfortable getting on the blog
just yet email the story to mjdoyle@twcny.rr.com

The NYS Canal System is not opening on schedule. Flooding on the Seneca River west of Cross Lake is at 7.1 feet ABOVE summer navigation (according to state readings). Probably the worst flooding on the canal system at this time. Wonder how flooding will affect the Northeast American Carp Tournament in Baldwinsville the week of May 16th. Check it out at www.AmericanCarpSociety.com

Jordan Historical

The Jordan Historical Society does have a web page on www.JordanNY.com
From the front page go to Erie Canal Museum, Jordan Historical Society & Local Genealogy.

As with most groups the Jordan Historical Society is a group of volunteers and very, very busy.
I will ask if they could possibly write a story each month that could be posted on www.JordanNY.com

Will keep you posted.

Where is the warmth?

A little taste of summer and now to "unseasonably" low temperatures. Only in CNY. Ya' gotta' love it. Enough whining.

Okay-when adding a new comment lets try to add it on the most recent post. This way it will be in the first or second at the top of the page. Noting what post you are referencing would be a great help to all readers. Something like this - RE Memorial Day Memories....then put your comments.

We'll get over this confusion.

I have to tell you that I have spoken to other bloggers and they tell me that even though the Jordan blog doesn't have a lot of bloggers yet it is very active compared to many.

Keep up the great job Jordan Bloggers. We are having fun and learning.

Memorial Day memories.......

Does anyone remember Memorial Day in Jordan? Here is what Jordan has now.

Five (5) graveside services on Memorial Day. The final service before the parade is held at the new Veterans Memorial Park on North Main Street.

One of the largest Memorial Day parades in Central New York, the Parade of Bands has more than ten (10) bands, including the Jordan-Elbridge Marching Eagles, veterans, fire trucks, police cars, floats, marching units, antique cars & tractors, and much, much more. Parade entires for the 2007 Parade of Bands are now being accepted.

Immediately after the Parade of Bands is the Massing of the Bagpipes (North Main Street). Big old bagpipe parade. It's hair-raising to have that wall of bagpipe and drum music coming at you, washing right over the top of you, and creating a vortex of sound that can actually create a breeze substantial enough to raise a few kilts! Check out the schedule at http://www.jordanny.com/ .

We're told Jordan has had a Memorial Day Parade since the late 1800's.

Ken Bush, Chairman of the Memorial Day Committee does a magnificant job providing Jordanites and Central New Yorkers an awesome Memorial Day.

First and foremost is to remember all victims of past wars, but also to take the opportunity to reflect on those affected by more recent wars.

New comments-
We're getting confused.
When posting a new comment could we try to post it under the most recent post? A post being what JordanNY writes (the most recent post at this point is Memorial Day memories...).
When we have a bunch of people posting comments it might be impossible for us to keep up with them as far as posting a new comment notice. Your thoughts or suggestions?

The Big Splash!

The Big Splash (pool campaign) opens in June. Yes, the original pool has been sized down. I can't tell you what the size is today but maybe one of our readers can. New this year will be a Splash Park. Many efforts are being made to revitalize the pool. With back-yard pools, other municipalities having their own pools, entry level boats and extremely busy kids attendance isn't what it used to be.

I've heard from a couple of readers. They will be on board soon. Another person contacted me with a password problem. We're growing.
I have also heard from the Jordan Historical Society and they are working on answers to many questions and creating an album of old photos.

One of the special beauties about this blog is that we don't allow anger.

To all you folks out there reading this blog----If you aren't comfortable posting a comment that's fine BUT please forward the blog onto your friends and family.

What would you like to hear about?

Sunny & warm....for now.

It is sunny & warm in CNY. Jordan did get some of the snow but we don't care now because it is all gone! The flowers and trees are budding as we head into real Spring.

I don't know about the stag but I can tell you the house with the wonderful iron fence is still there.

The walking tour grant program won't be announcing awards until May. We are in the process of seeking other grants for other projects planned around the village. Just trying to spruce things up a bit!

If anyone has a problem signing into this blog there is a great help desk on this site.

Boxing Hall of Fame

In response to the post by Dave V. under Willowdale........

We have a photo of Carmen Basilio placing a golden block on the foundation of the Cross Lake Boat Club around early 1950's. They were a new club building their clubhouse. The club is still active today offering members an affordable and convenient location to launch their boats into the NYS Canal System (Seneca River section).

There is now a Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, NY. Below is a link to their website.
http://www.ibhof.com/ibhfhome.htm

What other attractions did the Jordan Fall Festival have in those years? Today we
have the Greased Pole Climb, an Alpine Run, the kids greased pole cross, live bands, an antique & classic car, bike n' truck show, huge craft tent, merchants tent, pre-read book sale, of course the great food and much more. The event schedule is beginning to grow and can be viewed at www.JordanNY.com scroll down to the festival link.

Willowdale Dairy, Jordan, NY

We have one of the Willowdale bottles - it has a pinkish color to it. Someone once told me where the dairy was but have since forgotten.

Does anyone out there have any Jordan jugs or crocks? Please send us photos. These are quite rare and quite valuable. Many people around town have some and our local antique shop, Cabin Creek( http://www.jordanny.com/cabin_creek.htm ) has some often. Peg at Cabin Creek also sells "A Stroll in Jordan, NY" which is a lovely architectural & historical guide to old buildings and homes around the village. The Jordan Erie Canal Museum has a wonderful collection of Jordan jugs and crocks.

New comments have been posted on Honey Dew & Events.

Seeing though outhouses were a big thing what can the Erie Canal Committee do to
include an outhouse (newly built and un-used) in the annual Erie Canal Celebration-JordanNY?

The Plan

We know it's tough for readers to know where new posts are made so what we'll try to do is do a post like this and share where a new post has been made.

Welcome to new blogger Linda (Ketcham) Handley who left a post under Blogging 101 (header).

Dave Vromman left a new post under Connecting yesterday with today.

Also welcome to Bruce. See the new post from Bruce under Connecting yesterday with today. Susan & Bruce are members of the Jordan historical society. We should be seeing some neat out-house photos of Jordan. Are we really excited about seeing outhouse photos? Mmmmmmmm.........We are!

Enhancing the canal in Jordan

Numerous ideas are circulating on how Jordan can enhance their canal presence. With the state-wide revitalization of the both navigable canal and the original canal many canal communities are thriving.

Jordan has the history. The walking tour is a beginning. If you have any suggestions let us know.

Connecting yesterday with today....

South Main Street - Cindy K. (early 50's), Teresa (current. Thanks for the photos Teresa.

We are working on a series of Jordan photo albums which will be available on line. Hopefully we'll get at least one connected Easter Sunday. Hey Dave V., do you have any photos of out-houses on the four corners?

Is everyone telling their friends and family about the JordanNY Blog?

Events in Jordan

For a small village we are lucky to have three...well kind of four special events.

Beginning the summer with a large Memorial Day Commemoration (5-graveside services), Parade of Bands, Massing of the Bagpipes. With more than 10 bands, floats, fire trucks, veterans, girl and boy scouts and much, much more some say the Jordan parade is one of the largest in Central New York. Chicken-bbq, hot dog/hamburg/sausage sale and three restaurants feed our hungry visitors. The Jordan Historical Society hosts an open house at the Jordan Erie Canal museum and the Bramley Free Library hosts an ice cream social. Spectators from across CNY spend the day in Jordan.

Mid-summer, July 14th this year we have a the Erie Canal Celebration. A new event in Jordan, this year is the third. A village wide yard sale, art & craft vendors, music, open house at the Jordan Erie Canal Museum, Erie Canal Cloggers demonstration and more attract visitors for the day.

In the fall we have the Jordan Fall Festival - this year is the 61st! September 21, 22 & 23. The major fund raiser for the Jordan Community Council the festival has grown to be a northeast attraction. Greased pole climb, antique & classic car, bike n' truck show, Alpine Classic Run, live headliner music entertainers, kid's greased pole cross, home-made donuts, pre-read book sale, amusement rides, live reptiles, amazing food, and so much more. More than 300 volunteers working over the three day event. The Festival committee works year 'round to plan another great festival. One of the oldest and continually running events in New York State we offer free admission, free parking, free shuttle and free live entertainment.

With winter brings the Christmas Tree Lighting..including a visit from Santa. After the tree lighting in the village center we Christmas carol along the canal towpath to the fire department where we all have cookies and cocoa with Santa. This special event is for friends and neighbors to gather together and enjoy the holiday season.

Learn more about each event at http://www.jordanny.com/

Blogging 102 & Welcome New Blogger!

Reminder: When visiting the blog be sure to check for comments at the bottom of each post. Bloggers have the option of which post to comment on so there may be a new comment you have not seen back in the beginning of this blog.

Okay enough of the teaching stuff!

Welcome to our newest blogger - Cindy Ketcham. Check out Cindy's comment in the Blogging 101 post. Her family lived in Jordan in the 40's & 50's. Cindy being born in 1950.

More people will respond. It just takes time and people forwarding the blog to old friends, neighbors and family.

So long from rainy Jordan, NY. Home of the only, original, standing Erie Canal Lock Tender's House.
