an original Erie Canal Village with a distinctive concentration of nineteenth and early twentieth century architecture. During the 1830-40's and 1870-85's the Erie Canal made Jordan a principal commercial, industrial and transportation center of western Onondaga County.

New Comments April 5
New comments have been posted on Honey Dew & Events.
Seeing though outhouses were a big thing what can the Erie Canal Committee do to include an outhouse (newly built and un-used) in the annual Erie Canal Celebration-JordanNY?
I have an idea for an event. Why not make it a race. What could be more fitting than a race to the out-house.
Using the pictures that have surfaced of the out-houses on the 4 corners at Halloween, new ones could be built for the event that are as close to the originals as they can be built (prior to use, of course). I am sure that there are vintage materials around that could be used for their construction.
Anyway, contestants would start near The Canal and N. Main St. Maybe in the empty lot next to Bush's Funeral Home and race up to one of the out-houses and back. It could be set up for different age groups and or genders. I bet a relay race, using Sears Roebuck Catalogs as batons to be handed off between team mates would be a great touch.
Since my dad, Ed Vrooman was one of the 2 people in town that took care of septic tanks, Kenneth C. "Mac" McCormack being the other, maybe it could be the Ed Vrooman memorial run to the out-house. I know that he was really proud of his home town, was a US Navy WWII Veteran, a volunteer fireman, a Mason and spent a lot of time making Jordan a great place to live.
Dave; where are you living now. Elaine and I have been on Cottle Road in Weedsport since we got married. Yes I sure do remember the old days in Jordan. If you remember we lived at 11 Lawrence st.I do not know of any out-houses around any more. We used them all up years ago. We used to get them from Jones Point area. They now have flush toilets. I remember as a kid playing in the barn next to your house. We used to store news papers there and Ms Gilbert the teacher was in charge of it. Thats all for now Jack
