Sorry for the absence here. I really have no good excuse. What's yours?
Be sure to visit www.JordanNY.com the "official" website for Memorial Day, Jordan, NY, Erie Canal Celebration, Jordan, NY and the Jordan Fall Festival.
The festival has booked Jodilyn - a 1997 Jordan-Eblridge graduate and a Nashville star!
The information about Jodilyn will be posted on-line this weekend at www.JordanNY.com .
Is anyone out there?

Glad you are back. I was wondering if the whole village was covered in snow. I must say that I do not miss those late spring snow storms. I am thinking that we had snow on Memorial Day one year. I don't think that it lasted long, but none the less it was snow.
John Pinckney is right, we camped on Grand Island, not Goat Island. Goat Island did not sound right when I wrote it, but I did not take the time to look at a map and see that it was not where we stayed. Does anyone have any pictures of that Jamboree?
I can't remember if it was Memorial Day or the 4th of July, but I do remember decorating my bicycle with American flags with red, white, and blue crate paper woven in the spokes and wrapped around the handle bars as well as the rest of the frame, then riding it in the parade. The only spectators along the route must have been from out of town because I think that just about everyone in Jordan that could walk was in the parade.
From Memorial Day up to the Fall Festival it seems that every weekend one of the neighboring villages had some sort of celebration with a parade and festivities. Clam bakes were a part of a lot of them. Our fire department marched in all of them I am sure and usually had the open cab fire engine along with them. There was usually a water fight between the fire departments that consisted of driving the opposing team back with a fire hose. Later, after quite a few injuries, they rigged up a large ball on an overhead wire that was moved back an forth with the winner successfully driving the ball into their opponents end of the field.
Still waiting to see the slide show of Jordan in the 50's.
Does anyone know if Gregg Kimberly is still in the area? I sure would like to hear from him.
Cindy:
Father Thurston is the priest I remember the most from my time in Jordan. Father Lee was there before him, but I do not remember him as well. Father Thurston had a son, John, that was my age. I remember he and I trading Straight Arrow cards. These cards were found between the layers of shredded wheat in the cereal box.
Let's get this blog rolling. I think that Maureen needs to be worked a whole lot harder. Looking at all that she is involved in besides this blog I think that she really deserves a hand and maybe a few more fingers to keep up. Thanks!
Did Jordan get hit with the snow that hit around Easter?
Across Lawrence Street from Brace Hardware was a house that set back from South Main Street. It had an iron "picket" fence around it and and what I remember as a stag in the yard back near the house. I am wondering if the house, the fence, and stag are still there. The fence had a nice ring to it as you walked or rode by on your bicycle with a stick playing along the fence.
Any word yet on the funding of the historic walking tour you proposed?
Boy that Vrooman guy sure asks a lot of questions! The house on Lawrence St belonged to
Charley Taylor, the owner of the Chevrolet dealership that was located where Tom Foote's service station is now, right in the center of town.
Greg Kimberly lives in the 1000 Islands area just outside of Alex Bay.
John:
I have a lot of catching up to do, over 50 years. I hope that I have not angered you with my questions.
Is there any plans for a fifty year reunion for the class of 1960. I remember Mr. Ramsdell saying that the class of '60 was his class. He planned to retire with us graduating. Do not know if he did or not.
Who's angry, I'm loving this! The last Jordan Central Class was 1961, and I don't remember if Dr Ramsdell had retired by then or not.
I haven't heard anything about a 50 year reunion but, then again, we still have almost 3 years to go. I'll certainly do my best to keep you posted! Speaking of our class, I remember you asking about Sally Pert. She was killed in a traffic accident just before the end of her freshman year in college. It was a definite reminder to all us 19 year olds that we are not immortal even though we occasionally acted that way.
John:
I am really glad that you are having a good time at this. I sure am! Some of the cobwebs are not as easy to clear away as they once used to be! Your sure are helping with the process.
You have a memory like a trap. Once in, nothing gets out. I had forgot that Mr. Ramsdell was in fact Dr. Ramsdell. Glad you corrected my error. Mr. Hillis Quick was the vice principal, right?
I was was thinking the other day of the time I was exploring the wreck of an old house a couple of lots from Hamilton Street on Lawrence St. I think that it belonged to the Skutts (spelling). Anyway we found a dog collar caught on one of the old timbers. It had a name on it and low and behold it belonged to your dog Spike (almost positive of the name). Don't remember who was with me at the time but we took it and gave it to your mother.
That is a shame about Sally Pert. She was one good looking gal. I think that almost everyone was in love with her. I think that I heard about that tragedy when I was back there in 1980.
