'Bulge' in Tree is Cannon Ball

Photo (date unknown) provided by George B. of Jordan
who received it from Mary S., granddaughter of Mr Teachout.

The capation reads: Source of much wonderment on the part of Jordan Natives for years, a bulge in a 200-year-old tree near Jordan High School was found to have been caused by a seven pound cannon ball which was fired as a salute to the train bearing the body of President Lincoln when it passed through the village in 1865. Jerome Teachout, 81, right, village night watchman, and O.J. Conger, 68, who discovered the ball when they cut down the tree, are shown looking at the missile, which will be presented to the school. The Canal in NYS

Lots of exciting stuff going on across the state for the canal that Jordan can and will benefit from. Headed to Rome tomorrow to attend a seminar - "Art Walks on Water". Created by Lori Skogg from Brockport her vision is to have an art trail across the state with every community having art work around the streets, canal, whatever.

Another state wide project is "Mural Mania". Started by Mark DeCracker, president of the Lyons Chamber of Commerce the vision is also to have murals in a string of canal communities across the state. The Village Center Committee of Jordan has a meeting with a mural artist in early June. Permission has already been granted by the owner of the Laundromat building (formerly hardware) located on Mechanic Street, behind the bank. The vision is to have 2, maybe 3 different Jordan canal photos painted on the back side (canal side) and the east side (which would be viewable from the USPS office).

Of course this project, like others must wait until the appropriate grant money comes available...and it will.

Another warm an sunny day in Jordan. Spring has really arrived....finally!

A story about the Lincoln cannonball

Baldwinsville (N.Y) Gazette, March 12, 1964
Cleverley Recalls Cannon Firing at Jordan Tree

Olin Cleverley, Warners resident, called The Gazette by telephone recently to remind residents of an incident that occurred at Jordan near the New York Central tracks at the time that the Abraham Lincoln funeral train passed through enroute between Washington, D.C., and the martyred president's final resting place in his home state of Illinois.
The story had been passed down through the years in Jordan that a group of crack artillerymen home on leave at Jordan fired a cannon as the Lincoln train passed through that community and that the ball from the cannon lodged in an elm tree on the Otis farm.
When that tree was taken down, a piece of the tree containing the old cannonball was saved and kept in the old Jordan High School for many years.
What brought the story to mind, Mr. Cleverley stated, was the recent article appearing in The Gazette which was a story appearing in the papers of the late Miss Sophia Voorhees of Baldwinsville which had described how residents living along the New York Central tracks at Warners had attached flax to sticks and soaked the flax in kerosene. When the Lincoln train passed through, the flax was lit and formed a colorful avenue of light in the darkness between which the funeral train passed.
