Village Winter Scene

(Photographer RM Platten)
Fourteen days until Spring! Well so says the tradition..... Ask an astronomer or a calendar manufacture and they will say spring begins one day earlier, March 20th, in all times zones in Northern America. In 2016 Spring will begin on March 19. Something to do with vernal equinox.......this is enough information for me but if you'd like to learn more visit www.space.com.

Looks like the picture of the Baptist Church was taken from Clinton Terrace. At the top of Clinton Terrace on the corner of Quince Street is the house where I grew up. At that time we had a big red barn. I would love to see a picture of the house as it is now. I know that the barn is gone and the house has been refurbished since the time that I lived there, in the late 40's and early 50's. I remember that my parents window, the second story window along the Clinton Terrace side and closest to Quince Street used to have a red stained glass panel across the top of it. I wonder if that is still there. My sisters window, the second story window on the same side of the house and closest to Hamilton street also had a stained glass panel, but I do not remember what it looked like. My grandmother, Maude Gilbert, lived on Hamilton Street about 6 or 7 houses up from where Lawrence Street ran into it.

I remember all of the snow in the winter. When I was living there the village had a tractor and plowed the sidewalks. We would walk through canyons that were almost as high as we were many times. Lawrence hill was great for sledding all the way down to Main Street.

Our church was the Christ Episcopal Church. At that time everyone had a church. We were let out of school at noon on Fridays so that we could go to our churches for church school. I was told that at one time Jordan was mentioned in Guinness Book of Records as being the smallest village to support 5 different churches. I think that there was a Pentecostal Church there at one time. Before my time.
