Eno Point or Jones Point? Also a new comment has been posted.

The map shows the area as Jones Point. When Mrs.Ruth Eno Reed sold the property to the camp owners she insisted that we call the area Eno Point, as her family had owned it longer than the Jones. The Eno family purchased the area in 1918. She sold the area and a campers association was formed in 1982 called the Eno Point Campers Association, Inc. which owns the common property and sets the rules for living on the point. The Town of Elbridge and the Onondaga County Health Department put a lot of restrictions on us when they allowed the subdivision of the camps.

Where did Jordan get its name?

Jordan NY was first settled in 1797 by Zenus and Aaron Wright, who built the first house within the present boundaries of the Village. According to a clipping from a scrapbook belonging to Mrs. J. C. Babcock, Jordan was named as follows: After Zenus and Aaron Wright had completed a plank house, they then built a saw mill just south of the present White Mill; the water for this mill was obtained by building a dam across the flats from the mill east to the bluff, on what is known as Hollow Road (Valley Drive). This flooded the flat or swamp, which was one unbroken growth of dense cedar trees, to a depth of three or four feet. There was no road to Elbridge at this time, only a footpath, which ran along the bluffs on the west side of Skaneateles Creek. After the work was completed, the race was found to be too shallow to discharge the water, and David Munro of Camillus came with oxen to scrape it out. After the work was completed, the water was let out, and the following men were all standing on the bank looking at its flow: Zenas and Aaron Wright, Samuel Powers, Reynolds Corey and Elizur Hills. One of them remarked that the water was just as clear as the River Jordan and Mr. Hills said, "Why not name this place Jordan, after my native place, Jordan Lane in Connecticut." This meeting the views of the others it was decided to call it Jordan.

Jones Point.....Eno Point???

Nancy O. brings up an interesting topic. Is it Jones Point or Eno Point? I never know which to call it. We'll try to get some up-to-date photos to share.

Village of Jordan residents are gearing up for the annual Village Wide Yard Sale Saturday July 11th. Huge crowds spend the day in Jordan looking for treasures....and many find some.

Jordan Hippodrome

From Jack Horner, Jordan Historian: I do not know where it got its name. When the new building was built in 1913 a Mr. Wilcox of Fulton rented the downstairs south side of the building for a movie theater. Various ladies of talent were hired to play the piano in keeping with the story on the screen. Young men of the village operated the projector. Eventually they put a player piano in the theater, so that they did not have to hire a pianist. When talking pictures came it was found that the theater was to small and the owner Frederick Zimmer moved the theater to Weedsport were he had a larger place to show his talking movies.

The closing was announced in the March 11, 1931 "Jordan Home Paper". But in April and May we have letters to a Mr. George W. Payne and contracts from Warner Brothers for films.

They were for 2 days running and titles I never heard of, "College Lovers", "One nite at Suzies". I think that it folded shortly after June of 1931.
