Spring is in the air......

Flowers are popping up, skunk is in the air, the blue birds & robins are back and the winter jackets can almost be packed away.

This little guy is out of hibernation.

Old Jordan School

Are these photos of the same school?

On the right is the old Jordan School after it was burned. The view is from Lawrence Street.
Does anyone know what year it burned?

Dave V. emailed the photo showing the school after the fire. Dave added that in the background, to the right is the roof of our (Vrooman's) barn with the cupola on top.

Before I forget to post.....

This Jordan Crock sold at public auction for $7,935 at Crockerfarm Auction in Maryland (March 20009).
It is called a JORDAN, NY Stoneware Jug w/ Cobalt Bird in Wreath.
Pretty neat that Jordan created such lovely and valuable stoneware.

Answers to some questions here.

The Pizza Sam's building;
It's my understanding that it is still for sale. Not sure why it is being left to fall apart.
The same person that had it as Pizza Sam's still owns it.

Someone suggested handing out flyer's advertising this blog page. Great idea. I've made the flyer's up and will start getting them out and around.

Dave V. has emailed more photos which I will get posted this week some time.

Brace Hardware today

The building has been well maintained. It has two main floor retail spaces for rent. Unfortunately

it is vacant. Great place for an antique store, or an ol' time ice cream fountain.

Brace Hardware, Jordan

Notes on the Cole/Brace Hardware 8/06

-C.C. Cole & Company was in business from at least 1880 on
-It might have been located somewhere else before the present building was erected in 1898
-Wayne Cole and Adelbert Brace formed a firm in 1900 and dissolved it in 1913.
-Cole went to Baldwinsville and opened a hardware there and Adelbert Brace continued on with Wilbur Eaton and Roy Brace until about 1919.
-In 1919 (and in one instance 1918!) the new firm is advertising in the local paper as Brace Hardware.
-Like any typical small town hardware, they sold almost everything a homeowner or farmer might need , including: seeds, furnaces, round oak stoves, glass ware, mails, pumps, doors, agricultural implements and everything in between!
-The Brace Hardware had a full time tin-smith on hand
-At least three generations of Braces worked there. Adelbert Brace, his daughter and her husband, Don and Marion Brace Williams, then their daughter and her husband Winona and Ray Clifford.
-At Christmas time, during the 1950’s, the toys and gifts were displayed on the second floor and in the turret.

Jordan Hotel decorated

Dave V. in Oregon shared this photo of the Jordan Hotel decorated with flags.

Is that a historical sign on the right side of the photo? I don't think it's still there. I'll check tomorrow. If not does anyone know what the sign said?

I think the problem is.....

many people want to read it but not post on it. Also I think many find it confusing because a comment may be posted a week or so back.

Any suggestions in how to keep this going and growing are welcomed.

Spring is almost upon us here in Jordan. Won't be long and the canal flower gardens will be blooming.

Memorial Day commemoration ceremonies are being planned as well as the parade.
If you want to be a part of Memorial Day in Jordan call Ken Bush Jr @ 315.689.9301.

Dave V. has ask....

What happened to the Blog?

We can't seem to keep an interest going. People need to post on the blog or at the very least comment in an email that we can post on the blog. The idea is to have continuing dialogue. It doesn't have to be daily but should be at least a couple of times each week.

Let's give it another try. New year maybe there will be new interest.

To start the new year I've got some great news for the area.
The Cross Lake Inn & Marina is hosting the Cross Lake Vintage Race Boat Regatta August 6, 7, & 8th (this year). This will be an annual event that will give the economy in our area a nice kick.

This regatta is sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association. The Cross Lake Regatta has unique connection to Cross Lake that some of you may remember.

In the 1950's the Cross Lake Hotel hosted American Power Boat Association boat races. Who knows maybe some of the boats that raced then may be in the vintage regatta this August.

We are in search of photos, news articles, programs or whatever anyone may have from the 1950's races.

I have a couple of photos I'll get posted in a couple of days.

Does anyone remember the 1950's races?

Halloween in Jordan, NY?

For years I have heard Halloween in Jordan used to be quite interesting. For one thing I'm told several outhouses would end up at the four corners.

Share some stories....better yet some photos!

Class of 1960...Has a date and location been set?

Jordan 1960 alumni vidie said... to Dave Vrooman.....

Hello David, I am a '59-er and was in your sister Kathy's class. I lived across the street from you. Remember me??? Hope you attend the reunion as I plan to be there to see many friends from the class of 60.

This post is also under the previous Class of 1960 but it has been a awhile so it was posted under a new heading here.

It sounds like a date has been set for a 1960 reunion. Anyone want it posted here?

Please if you are confused on how the blog works email your comment to mjdoyle@twcny.rr.com and I will post it for you. It is not unusual for people to be confused over the blog so you are not alone!

Update Jordan Central School

We are working with the Jordan historian on getting a graduating class photo and are hoping the list of graduates. Maybe someone out there has the list?

Dave Vrooman has posted a comment on the Thursday, July 9, 2009 post.

The email address for Jeannene A. Simonds Riddle posted July 9 is not currently working. it will be corrected within a few days.

We've received email from a Jordan Central 1952 graduate. If we get permission from this graduate we'll post that information.

Shall we post a notice in newspapers seeking Jordan Central 1960 graduates?
