Old Jordan School

On the right is the old Jordan School after it was burned. The view is from Lawrence Street.
Does anyone know what year it burned?

This Jordan Crock sold at public auction for $7,935 at Crockerfarm Auction in Maryland (March 20009).

It is called a JORDAN, NY Stoneware Jug w/ Cobalt Bird in Wreath.

Pretty neat that Jordan created such lovely and valuable stoneware.

The Pizza Sam's building;
It's my understanding that it is still for sale. Not sure why it is being left to fall apart.
The same person that had it as Pizza Sam's still owns it.

Someone suggested handing out flyer's advertising this blog page. Great idea. I've made the flyer's up and will start getting them out and around.

The building has been well maintained. It has two main floor retail spaces for rent. Unfortunately

it is vacant. Great place for an antique store, or an ol' time ice cream fountain.

Notes on the Cole/Brace Hardware 8/06

-C.C. Cole & Company was in business from at least 1880 on
-It might have been located somewhere else before the present building was erected in 1898
-Wayne Cole and Adelbert Brace formed a firm in 1900 and dissolved it in 1913.
-Cole went to Baldwinsville and opened a hardware there and Adelbert Brace continued on with Wilbur Eaton and Roy Brace until about 1919.
-In 1919 (and in one instance 1918!) the new firm is advertising in the local paper as Brace Hardware.
-Like any typical small town hardware, they sold almost everything a homeowner or farmer might need , including: seeds, furnaces, round oak stoves, glass ware, mails, pumps, doors, agricultural implements and everything in between!
-The Brace Hardware had a full time tin-smith on hand
-At least three generations of Braces worked there. Adelbert Brace, his daughter and her husband, Don and Marion Brace Williams, then their daughter and her husband Winona and Ray Clifford.
-At Christmas time, during the 1950’s, the toys and gifts were displayed on the second floor and in the turret.

Jordan Soaps, Herbs & Spices is opening a retail space at the new Paradise Market located in the old Hechinger on Erie Blvd., Dewitt.

Only open weekends this new concept offering an upscale shopping bazaar has a grand opening next weekend. Friday noon-8pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am-6pm.

What happened to the Blog?

We can't seem to keep an interest going. People need to post on the blog or at the very least comment in an email that we can post on the blog. The idea is to have continuing dialogue. It doesn't have to be daily but should be at least a couple of times each week.

Let's give it another try. New year maybe there will be new interest.

To start the new year I've got some great news for the area.
The Cross Lake Inn & Marina is hosting the Cross Lake Vintage Race Boat Regatta August 6, 7, & 8th (this year). This will be an annual event that will give the economy in our area a nice kick.

This regatta is sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association. The Cross Lake Regatta has unique connection to Cross Lake that some of you may remember.

In the 1950's the Cross Lake Hotel hosted American Power Boat Association boat races. Who knows maybe some of the boats that raced then may be in the vintage regatta this August.

We are in search of photos, news articles, programs or whatever anyone may have from the 1950's races.

I have a couple of photos I'll get posted in a couple of days.

The map shows the area as Jones Point. When Mrs.Ruth Eno Reed sold the property to the camp owners she insisted that we call the area Eno Point, as her family had owned it longer than the Jones. The Eno family purchased the area in 1918. She sold the area and a campers association was formed in 1982 called the Eno Point Campers Association, Inc. which owns the common property and sets the rules for living on the point. The Town of Elbridge and the Onondaga County Health Department put a lot of restrictions on us when they allowed the subdivision of the camps.

Where did Jordan get its name?

Jordan NY was first settled in 1797 by Zenus and Aaron Wright, who built the first house within the present boundaries of the Village. According to a clipping from a scrapbook belonging to Mrs. J. C. Babcock, Jordan was named as follows: After Zenus and Aaron Wright had completed a plank house, they then built a saw mill just south of the present White Mill; the water for this mill was obtained by building a dam across the flats from the mill east to the bluff, on what is known as Hollow Road (Valley Drive). This flooded the flat or swamp, which was one unbroken growth of dense cedar trees, to a depth of three or four feet. There was no road to Elbridge at this time, only a footpath, which ran along the bluffs on the west side of Skaneateles Creek. After the work was completed, the race was found to be too shallow to discharge the water, and David Munro of Camillus came with oxen to scrape it out. After the work was completed, the water was let out, and the following men were all standing on the bank looking at its flow: Zenas and Aaron Wright, Samuel Powers, Reynolds Corey and Elizur Hills. One of them remarked that the water was just as clear as the River Jordan and Mr. Hills said, "Why not name this place Jordan, after my native place, Jordan Lane in Connecticut." This meeting the views of the others it was decided to call it Jordan.

Jordan Hippodrome

From Jack Horner, Jordan Historian: I do not know where it got its name. When the new building was built in 1913 a Mr. Wilcox of Fulton rented the downstairs south side of the building for a movie theater. Various ladies of talent were hired to play the piano in keeping with the story on the screen. Young men of the village operated the projector. Eventually they put a player piano in the theater, so that they did not have to hire a pianist. When talking pictures came it was found that the theater was to small and the owner Frederick Zimmer moved the theater to Weedsport were he had a larger place to show his talking movies.

The closing was announced in the March 11, 1931 "Jordan Home Paper". But in April and May we have letters to a Mr. George W. Payne and contracts from Warner Brothers for films.

They were for 2 days running and titles I never heard of, "College Lovers", "One nite at Suzies". I think that it folded shortly after June of 1931.

Blessing of the Bikes in Jordan..

Last Saturday Christ Episcopal Church in Jordan held their annual blessing of the bikes. What a site! There were around 70 motorcycles and one bicycle in the parking lot. A super job by Church volunteers.

The flowers are coming out left and right. Why is it the grass is so green this time of year? Everything look beautiful.

We're hoping the "latest" graffiti on the canal wall behind the BIG M in Jordan will be removed or covered before Memorial Day.

Why do people do things like this? It just looks terrible.

NYS Fallen Firefighters Memorial Wall

Have you ever been there? It is a very emotional experience, even for those that have no-one on it.

My dad was immortalized on the wall in 2005. The ceremony NYS holds is a wonderful tribute to all fallen firefighters.

If in Albany stop by the memorial wall. It is one of those projects NYS has done with class.

corner! The Jordan Memorial Day Committee is putting the finishing touches on one of the largest Memorial Day parades in Central New York. Entries are still being accepted.

It's looking like this year the Jordan Parade of Bands might be the largest in CNY.

Cross Lake Marina & Restaurant is looking good! On a quick drive by you'll find fresh paint, the upper deck is enclosed with sliding glass doors - won't this be great? Enjoying dinner overlooking Cross Lake minus bugs!

Expanded decks, the docks are going in, and much more.

This is one of the most beautiful waterfront settings in Central New York. Go by boat or by car (Only 10 minutes west of Baldwinsville, 20 minutes north of Auburn).

Check out the photos we've attached. I for one am looking forward to hopping in my boat and cruising over to Cross Lake for lunch or dinner.

Hippodrome in Jordan, NY?

Thanks for your tidbit John. I did not know the Jordan hippodrome was in that era.

All I can ever find about a hippodrome is that they were Greek stadiums for horse racing and chariot racing. I couldn't get this explanation to fit with the Jordan hippodrome.

Anyone have an idea of why it was called hippodrome?

Cross Lake Marina update

We received this email from Daryl yesterday. Thanks for the update Daryl.

Hey... I saw your blog however it is not allowing me to respond for some reason. I thought I would send you an email and maybe you could update that blog with this new info.

The Cross Lake Marina IS opening May 1, 2009! I think the restaurant part is going to open some time in June. A ton of money has been put into that place this year and it is looking nice! I think in the past people have tried to just open it up by not doing much or just doing the same old same but I am confident people will be happy with what they see this time.

As I get more information I will try to keep you posted!!

Your list is pretty complete but let me throw out some numbers for some perspective on the how "the times they are a changin". I don't guarantee my numbers are 100% accurate but they're close enough to make the point!Back in the 40' - 50's there were 3hardware stores, 4 diner/soda fountain shops, 4 grocery stores and a meat market, 3 barber shops, a liquor store, a NYSEG office, a variety store (mostly clothing), 3 bars, a jewelry store, 3 doctors, a drug store, a Chevy dealership where Tom's Auto is now, the feed mill (Wheeler's), a dentist, and an optometrist. Not to mention the bank, 2 or 3 garages, the wire mill (which was a thriving 3 shift a day business then). What is now the village office was the fire house and a library. There are surely some I'm not remembering but the point is there was a thriving business community.That was before the advent of the Thruway and route 31 came right through the center of the village, so there was a lot of truck traffic. Of course, the trucks made great snow ball targets from up on Clinton Terrace, which we all thought was great sport. It's probably safe to say the truckers didn't share our opinion.

How about you? I found this green photo on-line. It was taken at the site of the original Erie Canal Lock 51 located on NYS Route 31 west of Jordan and east of Weedsport. The NYS Canal Corporation created a beautiful park there complete with picnic table/benches and a photo collection kiosk.

From Judi Lauber: I came across your posts about the old Jordan high school. My husband and I live in the house that's where most of the school used to be. We looked it up in old Syracuse newspapers and found that the school burned to the ground on January 30, 1929. Attached are a couple of photos that we got when we bought the house. I think they're older than the one you posted--from before the addition in the back was built. You remarked on how modern the building looked. According to the news stories, that addition was less than 10 years old at the time of the fire.

As far as the statue in the second photo. I've been told the Jordan Historical Society has the base however the upper portion was melted during the war. It must have been a neat statue as it was a water fountain for humans, horses, cats and dogs....or so I am told.

Anyone out there have any information on the statue?

I think Bill Crofut's family used to own the grocery store that was on South Main Street.

Does anyone remember the Jordan leader? Published weekly from 1927-1972.
I was fortunate to pick up the Jordan Leader 1949 which is a hard-bound book that has every issue of the Jordan Leader in 1949. It's really interesting because for those that do not know the Jordan Fall Festival began in 1949.

Maybe we can get some Jordanites from www.Classmates.com to post on this blog.

It looks and feels like Spring has arrived. The flowers are popping up all around. This is a wonderful time to take a walk along the CanalWay Trail (Original Erie Canal Towpath) through the Village. You'll get to see the many birds that have returned from the South, tons of native plants popping up...oh and you'll get some exercise. Park right on North Main Street and enjoy an outdoor stroll through history. If you take some photos please share them with us to post.

Ice is melting..

The ice is almost out of Cross Lake. At the north end there are two ice bergs gradually melting away. Trout season opens April 1. According to DEC conditions favor an excellent season.
Open season begins May 1st.

What do you think about the different views of Jordan?

1) In the rain? Is the village romantic? I think mysterious.
2) In the snow? I see Jordan as old fashioned when it's covered in snow.
3) A sunny, hot August day? Lazy? Does the village look like a canal village in the summer with boats navigating east and west?
4) On an autumn day? Jordan looks like a field of corn waiting to be harvested.

Walking tour..

There is a plan for a self-guided walking tour in and around the Village of Jordan. Partial funding was through a federal grant however the funds for the balance have not been obtained yet. The plans are still in place. The hope is that we can obtain full funding. With the current economic climate in the country and New York State it isn't likely money will come through this year.

The tour will follow along the Canalway Trail, swing by several historic structures in the village. The hard part of creating such a trail is that Jordan has so many historic sites. The committee had to pick and choose which ones to include, not an easy job.

Jordan is located at 43°3′57″N 76°28′22″W / 43.06583°N 76.47278°W / 43.06583; -76.47278 (43.065779, -76.472915)[1].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.0 km²), all of it land.
The village was formerly located on the Erie Canal, which has been re-routed farther north. The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) passes north of the village, but there is no interchange at all in the town.
Skaneateles Creek flows through the village. The Jordan Aqueduct still stands where the Erie Canal crossed Skaneateles Creek.
Jordan is by the junction of New York State Route 31 and New York State Route 317.

The Jordan Masons held a Shrove Tuesday Dinner last night that was awesome!

If you missed out shame on you. Next year you better get there.

Great pancakes (I think they were buckwheat), real maple syrup, eggs strata (I think this is what they were called), sausage and fresh donuts. All you can eat!

It's called the Jordan-Elbridge Community Center. Located on NYS Route 31 in Jordan....near the Town Office Building.

Jordan High School

I've always been curious about the "old" Jordan High School up on the hill near the older cemetery (Hill Street, Lawrence Street, Quince Street area).

I think I have a photo of it. I'll dig through some photo boxes this weekend.

Anyone know anything about this old school? Maybe it was the first "official" school in Jordan? Need some help here people!

The Greater Jordan-Elbridge Chamber of Commerce opened its doors in the 1930's. It is still in operation today.

Holding monthly dinner-member meetings and monthly board meetings it is challenging for the board members to get local business members active.

A New Year! A New Look!

Hope you enjoy the new look of the Jordan, NY blog.

Snow everywhere! Snowmobiles everywhere! Kids sliding on the little hill on North Main Street in Jordan all the time. The "hill" is right next to what used to be the laundry mat then Pizza Sam's, now vacant. They slide safely into the canal bed away from automobile & snowmobile traffic. Every time I drive by there are a group of kids having a fun in the snow. Simple, inexpensive and safe fun for our kids.

The Canalway Trail (The former Erie Canal towpath that goes through the center of the Village)is always buzzing with snowmobiles.

If we have to have snow thankfully there are many that enjoy it.

In a couple of weeks The Great Eastern Whiteout event will come to Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge. This event draws people from 11 neighboring states and 4 provinces in Canada. It is a wonderful event for families across Central New York to enjoy (Go by snowmobile or car) and it gives the local economy a nice boost. Village of Jordan and Town of Elbridge historian Jack Horner will be displaying the historical artwork of James Irza Arnold (1887-1965) and Albert Heppenstall Arnold (1919-2000).
Both Father and Son were architects by trade, but had a great love for art.
James medium of choice was lithograph where Albert’s medium of choice was pencil and chalk.

This is an opportunity you won't want to miss.

Location: Jordan Museum, Mechanic Street, Jordan (Inside the Jordan Bramley Library).

Free admission and free parking.

Growing up in Jordan?

Okay I grew up in a small village, Old Forge, NY. It was the greatest place to grow up however I imagine it was different than growing up in the Village of Jordan. I'm sure growing up in Jordan was also great but different.

Old Forge early-mid 1950's to mid 1960's. We had local ski hills (Maple Ridge and I think Alpine ??), eventually McCauly Mountain came around to being. We also had a hot skating rink. Of course in the summer there was the Old Forge beach and the woods. Ski lessons and swimming lessons were kind of mandatory too.

Girl scouts and boy scouts were mandatory as was Sunday school. Friday night basketball games, the annual Snow Ball. I don't recall fights however I was a girl so maybe I wasn't around when they happened. No one liked the Spanish teacher, she had long finger nails and it hurt when she grabbed your arm! School lunches were 20 cents and they had the greatest apple crisp on earth....as a matter of fact I still use that recipe. Oh! We had a local drug store like you see on tv where the local teens hung out.

And those wonderful 45's. Mid to late 1960's brought us Friday Night Fright Theater (or something like this) with Baron Damone (Maybe Mike Price played this part?). We used to watch these at VanAuken's in Thendara which is now known as VanAuken's Inne.

Enough on my growing up......Won't you share stories about where you grew up? Even if it wasn't in the village of Jordan we want to hear about it. Any time, anywhere.

In other news the Village Center Committee is working on a plan to move forward in applying for Main Street Grant money. This grant program is for Main Street business areas.

In the Village of Jordan we're talking about what is referred to as the Village Center. This is from Bush Funeral Home (North Main Street) to and including Wheeler's Farm Home Store (formerly Agway on South Main Street), then from the Bennett Building on Clinton Street to the Jordan Bramley Library on Mechanic Street.

We'll have more to update everyone on within a few weeks. Commercial property owners within this area will be contacted within the next month or so to see if they are interested in participating in this application. This program is a 50%/50% matching program.

Fall is upon us here in Jordan, NY with an amazing array of colors everywhere. Of course the leaves are falling now and with a few more rainy days they'll all be gone. Our weather has been truly awesome with warm and sunny days and cooler nights. Looks like we had a frost last night.

The Jordan Fall Festival.

There are some new comments posted on different posts. Check them out. Some former residents are sharing their memories. We are looking for photos from the 50's. If you have some please email them in.

Village Historian Jack Horner and the Jordan Historical Society both have tons of photos. I could certainly go there and get bunches of photos, scan them and post them. The problem is I really don't have the time to do that. It is much less time consuming if someone could email some in. I will try to get to the historical society but can't guarantee anything especially now that we are into Festival season.

Phase 1 of the Jordan Outdoor Historical Gallery has been placed on the north outside wall of the Bennett Conservatory for the Arts Building located on North Main Street in Jordan.

Last evening provided a neat view of unusual cloud patterns over Jordan.

Here is one which makes me think I am looking at the Cascade Mountain Range in Washington State.

I never thought so many people took photos. We are getting lots of photos from Memorial Day. We just posted a few more and will probably create another Memorial Day album so we can display all that we have and continue to receive.
